ÉTUDES

The woven series Études comprises eight small-scale weavings created on a self-made hand loom, using local yarns from the Maritimes as well as upcylced clothing and fabric. I created this series in August and September of 2020, during a two-month artist residency at ASAP Artist-Run Centre in Antigonish.

These works are formal studies in mark-making, colour, and texture. Drawing on my background as a filmmaker, they explore compositional elements inherent in cinematography to further my personal vocabulary in textiles. As an interdisciplinary artist new to weaving, I drew inspiration from Terri Friedman’s concept of “yarn painting” and from Sheila Hicks’ small-scale woven series Minimes.

These works are introspections, expressions of my inner landscape during a particular time and place. In the late summer and early fall of 2020, six months into the pandemic, I worked on this series during road trips around Prince Edward Island and Nova Scotia, inhabiting the new feelings that my surroundings generated, tensions released from a COVID lockdown. The smallness of my loom made it a perfect travel companion.
